Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love the arts from her aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through art. DuVernay resided in Compton throughout her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was in her university. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence of a particular Jury member. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right out of high school. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
